The Center for Community Transformation (CCT) at Fresno Pacific University held a course in the Lowell Neighborhood (at First Presbyterian Church – M & Calaveras) for 11 weeks this spring called Faith and Finances — basic training on how to get your financial life together, ways to save, how to plan, how to use credit wisely, and more. The course utilizes a multi-ethnic team of trained leaders and a nationally field-tested, interactive and fun schedule. No financial experience is necessary. The course included weekly dinner and childcare, and cost was only $20. Participants were sponsored by a church or agency that matched their fee.
Participants have said:
I just paid off one of my payday loans because of this class. Two more to go and I’m done with those people. Never again.
My five year old son made lunch for me because he wanted to help me save money by not buying lunch. He’s learning good financial practices by watching me do what I’m learning in this class.
I had been saving for a microwave when one was given to me. Normally I would have spent that savings, but because of the class I put that money into an emergency fund.
A second course will be held in Lowell in the next few months, so keep your ears open! You can get on a waiting list for the class by calling the CCT at 559.453.2367. Then talk with your pastor or agency about nominating and sponsoring you.
