Established in 2004, Edgar Mondragon began the F.C. Diablos on his childhood field at Lowell Elementary. Mondragon, a Lowell native, grew up in Lowell when it was a tougher neighborhood. Now living on the same street that he said, “You didn’t go unless you wore the right colors or knew the right people,” Mondragon’s passion is in providing the same safe options for youth that he was given as a child. “They’re eyes,” is what Mondragon stated as the reason he continues to run eleven successful club soccer teams and giving the players, “ . . . something to look forward to next year.”
Personally, Mondragon was an avid soccer player in his own youth, even assistant coaching as early as his freshman year in high school. Soccer also gave him the opportunity to go on to college as he earned a scholarship to play at UC Irvine. Due to a knee injury, Mondragon was unable to continue playing at the collegiate level, but did continue his education earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Engineering at California State University, Pomona. After graduation he came back to the Fresno area and picked up a struggling soccer program at Lowell Elementary.
Now part of the Fresno Metro Youth Soccer League, the Diablo Club has won numerous league championships, state championships and has been to Nationals many times. More importantly, Mondragon stated that 70% of his alumni players are in college and have been offered scholarships because of their abilities.
Last year Mondragon began a recreational soccer program based at Lowell Elementary where five out of the six teams won their league titles.
Mondragon believes that soccer kept him out of trouble as a youth and he feels that the kids in Lowell, and surrounding areas, “ . . . deserve that chance,” as well. His goal is to continue to provide a quality, passionate soccer club to the youth in the Lowell area. “I’m hoping to get to the point where I can offer the competitive group to everybody . . . that’s my main goal.”
